EDITORS COMMENTS
Lord Northcliffe, the influential media mogul and founder of the Daily Mirror, is captured here in a moment of leisure at Sutton Park. The photograph, taken in August 1907, showcases Lord Northcliffe's passion for golf as he confidently swings his club on the picturesque golf course. Alfred Harmsworth, later known as Lord Northcliffe, made significant contributions to journalism during the early 20th century. In 1900, he ventured into tabloid newspaper publishing by launching the "New York World". Three years later, he established the Daily Mirror as a women's paper sold for just one penny. By January 1904, it was renamed the Daily Illustrated Mirror and transformed into an illustrated tabloid sold for half a penny. Not only did Lord Northcliffe excel in media entrepreneurship but also had diverse interests beyond journalism. On his estate at Brooklands in Britain, he played a pivotal role in opening the world's first specialized motor racing circuit in 1907. Intriguingly enough, Lord Northcliffe acquired control over another renowned publication - The Times - in 1908 further solidifying his influence within British media circles. Sadly though, this remarkable figure passed away on August 14th, 1922 at age 57. However brief his life may have been cut short; his legacy continues to be remembered through captivating photographs like this one from Memory Lane Prints.
