EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative portrait captures Mary, Queen of Scots (1542-1587) in the later years of her life, following her marriage to both Francis II of France (1514-1560) and Henry Stuart, Lord Darnley (1545-1567), and her eventual imprisonment in England. The inscription below the image, in a bold and flowing hand, reads "Mary R. R.," an abbreviation for "Regina Regum," or "Queen of Kings," reflecting her status as the reigning monarch of both France and Scotland. Mary's regal attire, adorned with pearls and ermine, adds to the sense of grandeur and authority. Her expression, however, suggests a deep and introspective thoughtfulness, perhaps reflecting the political turmoil and personal heartache that marked her reigns. Born in 1542 in Linlithgow Palace, Scotland, Mary was the only legitimate child of King James V and Mary of Guise. Her early years were marked by political instability and power struggles, culminating in her escape from Scotland at the age of five, following her mother's death and the accession of her uncle, Regent Moray. Mary spent the next 14 years in exile in France, where she was raised in the French court and eventually married Francis II in 1558. After Francis's death in 1560, Mary returned to Scotland, where she married Lord Darnley in 1565. Their union was marked by scandal and intrigue, culminating in Darnley's mysterious death in 1567. Mary was eventually imprisoned in England in 1568, following her involvement in the Babington Plot, a failed attempt to assassinate Queen Elizabeth I and place Mary on the English throne. Mary remained in English custody until her execution in 1587. This portrait, with its poignant inscription and intriguing subject matter, offers a glimpse into the complex and tumultuous life of one of Scotland and France's most famous queens.
