1536 Translator Tyndale

EDITORS COMMENTS
William Tyndale (circa 1494-1536): A Pioneering Figure in the History of the English Bible This evocative black and white portrait captures the intense gaze and unwavering determination of William Tyndale, a seminal figure in the history of the English language and the Bible. Born around 1494, Tyndale dedicated his life to the translation of the Holy Scriptures into English, a groundbreaking endeavor during a time when religious texts were strictly controlled by the Catholic Church. Tyndale's work began in the early 1520s, when he began translating the New Testament from Greek sources. His efforts were driven by a deep belief that the common people should have access to the Word of God in their native language. This conviction was not only a challenge to the Church's authority but also put Tyndale's life in grave danger. In 1535, Tyndale was arrested in Antwerp, Belgium, for heresy, having been betrayed by a friend. He was eventually tried, condemned, and sentenced to be strangled and burnt at the stake on October 6, 1536. His final words, reportedly uttered as the flames consumed him, were 'Lord, open the King of England's eyes.' Tyndale's translation of the New Testament, published in 1526, was the first English translation from the original Greek texts. It served as the foundation for subsequent English translations, including the King James Version. This portrait, likely taken from life, stands as a testament to Tyndale's unwavering commitment to making the Bible accessible to the English people, even in the face of persecution and death.
