1823 Assheton Viscount

EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking photograph captures the distinguished visage of the renowned British statesman, Richard Assheton, First Viscount Cross (1823-1914). Assheton's impressive political career spanned over five decades, during which he served variously as a Member of Parliament, Solicitor General, and Attorney General. He was later appointed as a Privy Counsellor and Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster. Born on March 2, 1823, in London, Assheton was educated at Trinity College, Cambridge, and called to the bar at the Inner Temple in 1847. He began his political career in 1852 as the Member of Parliament for Southampton. Assheton's legal expertise and eloquence in the House of Commons soon earned him the attention of the Conservative Party leadership, and he was appointed Solicitor General in 1858. Assheton's tenure as Solicitor General was marked by his successful prosecution of the Fenian terrorists, who were involved in a series of bombings in London during the late 1860s. He was later appointed Attorney General in 1866, a position he held until 1868. During this time, he played a key role in the trial of the Chartists, who were advocating for workers' rights and suffrage reform. Assheton's political fortunes took a turn when he joined the Liberal Party in 1868, and he was appointed as Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster in 1880. He served in this capacity until 1885, when he was elevated to the peerage as Viscount Cross. Assheton continued to serve in various government roles until his retirement from politics in 1905. This photograph, taken during the height of Assheton's political career, captures the gravity and intelligence of a man who dedicated his life to public service. His legacy as a statesman and legal expert continues to be celebrated in British history.
