Aesop Fable Fables File Litrature Viper

EDITORS COMMENTS
This enchanting 15th century print depicts the classic Aesop's Fable of "The Viper and the File." The ancient Greek tale, which has been retold for generations, imparts the timeless lesson of caution and the consequences of trusting appearances. In the story, a Viper, feeling threatened by a File, which was sharpening itself on a tree, coils itself around the handle of the File and bites it. The File, unaware of the danger, continues to sharpen, causing the Viper to be drawn closer and closer to its blade. Eventually, the File realizes the deception and cuts the Viper in two. This intricately detailed print, with its rich colors and ornate border, beautifully illustrates this morality tale. The Viper, with its hood spread wide and fangs bared, is shown in the act of attacking the unsuspecting File. The File, in turn, is depicted with a determined expression as it continues its work, oblivious to the danger. The print's historical significance lies in its antiquity and its connection to the vast literary tradition of Aesop's Fables. These tales, which have been translated into hundreds of languages and have influenced literature, art, and culture for over 2,500 years, continue to resonate with audiences today due to their timeless themes and universal appeal. This print serves as a reminder of the importance of being aware of the true nature of things and the potential danger that lurks beneath the surface. It is a testament to the enduring power of Aesop's Fables and the wisdom they impart.
