Victoire Conroy
Victoria Maria Louisa Conroy Hanmer, Lady Hanmer (12 August 1819 9 February 1866), often known as Victoire Conroy, youngest daughter of Sir John Conroy, comptroller of the household of the Duchess of Kent and the young Queen Victoria when Princess Victoria. Victoire, as daughter of Sir John Conroy, was one of the few childhood companions of Victoria though her reference to her as Miss V Conroy in her journals, suggests she was not well liked by the young princess. Date: c.1835

EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait captures Victoire Conroy, the youngest daughter of Sir John Conroy, in the mid-1830s. Sir John Conroy held a significant position in the household of the Duchess of Kent and later served as the comptroller to Queen Victoria during her formative years. As a result, Victoire was one of the few companions of the young Queen Victoria during her childhood. Born on August 12, 1819, Victoire's relationship with her famous contemporary was not without its complexities. The Princess Victoria, who later became Queen, referred to Victoire as "Miss V Conroy" in her journals, suggesting a certain distance or lack of fondness between them. Despite this, Victoire's presence in Victoria's life during her formative years is an intriguing aspect of the young monarch's history. The portrait, with its delicate features and poised expression, offers a glimpse into the life of this lesser-known figure who shared a unique bond with one of the most influential women in British history. The portrait, which dates back to the mid-1830s, is a testament to the rich historical tapestry of the Victorian era and the complex relationships that shaped the lives of its most prominent figures. This evocative image invites us to reflect on the intricacies of history and the stories that lie hidden beneath the surface.
