EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the historic St. Paul Building, located in the heart of New York City. Constructed in 1898, the St. Paul Building was a groundbreaking architectural marvel of its time, standing at 315 feet (96 m) and 26 stories tall. Designed by renowned architect George B. Post, the building boasted a unique design featuring the repetition of Ionic order for each floor. This architectural decision, while visually striking, had little cumulative effect and was a precursor to the more intricate designs that would come to define the city's iconic skyline. Despite its historical significance, the St. Paul Building met an unfortunate end in 1958 when it was demolished to make way for the Western Electric Building. The demolition occurred without any public expression of regret, marking the end of an era for this once-imposing structure. This photograph, taken circa 1900, captures the St. Paul Building in its prime, a testament to the city's rich architectural history. This image is part of the Box 160 Modern New York collection in the Boswell archive, and is available for rights-managed licensing through Mary Evans Prints Online.
