Carmelite Cemetery Lisieux Martin Novice Sainte Therese

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph, Saint Therèse Martin, also known as "The Little Flower of Jesus," is captured as a young Carmelite novice, standing amongst the graves in the cemetery at Lisieux, circa 1890. Therèse, born in 1873 in Alençon, France, felt a deep calling to religious life from a very young age. At the age of 14, she entered the Carmelite convent in Lisieux, where she spent the next 14 years of her life, dedicating herself to a hidden and contemplative existence. The photograph shows Therèse in her simple yet elegant Carmelite habit, her hands folded in prayer as she gazes off into the distance, lost in thought or contemplation. The serene expression on her face, combined with the peaceful setting of the cemetery, creates a sense of stillness and reverence. Therèse's spirituality was characterized by her deep love for God and her belief in the power of small, everyday acts of kindness and devotion. Her writings, particularly her autobiography "Story of a Soul," have inspired countless people throughout the world and have been translated into numerous languages. After her death in 1897 at the age of 24, Therèse was beatified in 1923 and canonized as a saint in 1925. Today, she is revered as a model of faith, humility, and devotion, and her legacy continues to inspire countless people around the world. This photograph offers a glimpse into the life of this remarkable young woman, who, despite her short life, left an indelible mark on the history of Christianity.
