EDITORS COMMENTS
Step right up, ladies and gentlemen, and feast your eyes on this delightful promotional postcard for "The Forty Thieves" by Ian Query, produced at the illustrious Lyceum Theatre in London during the festive season of 1912. During the tenure of the Melville Brothers, Walter and Frederick, between 1909 and 1938, the Lyceum Theatre became renowned for staging some of the West End's most premier pantomimes, rivalling the traditional home of pantomime at the Theatre Royal in Drury Lane. This design, created by the popular artist E.P. Kinsella, showcases the mischievous Forty Thieves, led by the daring Ali Baba, in the midst of their daring escapades. The Melville Brothers' Children's Pantomime Company, the strongest in London, brought this timeless tale to life on the stage, filled with fun, laughter, and graceful ballets. The reverse of the postcard is adorned with glowing press quotes, such as "As full of fun as a plum pudding is of currants" and "ballets are as graceful as they are beautiful." This design was also featured on the cover of the book of the pantomime's words and was reused for the new text in Christmas 1935. Experience the magic of the 1910s, as the Lyceum Theatre brought the best in theatrical entertainment to London, with their enchanting productions of comedies and revues that continue to captivate audiences to this day.
