Spitsbergen, Norway - Adventfjorden (Advent Bay). Depicted here is the former mining camp of Longyearbyen (located on its southwestern shore). Known as Longyear City until 1926, the town was established by and named after John Munro Longyear, whose Arctic Coal Company started coal mining operations in 1906 (not too long before this card was published). Operations were taken over by Store Norske Spitsbergen Kulkompani (SNSK) in 1916, which still conducts mining. Date: circa 1910

Adventfjorden, also known as Advent Bay, is a stunning inlet located on the west coast of Spitsbergen, Norway's largest island in the Svalbard archipelago. This photograph, taken circa 1910, captures the breathtaking beauty of the bay with its crystal-clear waters reflecting the surrounding snow-capped mountains. At the southwestern shore, the former mining camp of Longyearbyen can be seen. Established by John Munro Longyear in 1906, the town was initially known as Longyear City and served as the base for coal mining operations. Longyear had founded the Arctic Coal Company, which began extracting coal from the nearby mines. However, in 1916, the company was taken over by Store Norske Spitsbergen Kulkompani (SNSK), which continues coal mining in the area to this day. The image depicts the mining site, featuring a colliery with buckets on a chain being lifted to transport coal from the mine. The rugged terrain, harsh climate, and remote location of Longyearbyen add to its unique allure, making it an intriguing piece of Arctic history.
