EDITORS COMMENTS
Sir Howard Grubb: The Irish Pioneer of Telescopes and Scientific Instruments (1844-1931) This evocative photograph captures the distinguished visage of Sir Howard Grubb, an Irish inventor and manufacturer of telescopes and scientific instruments, who made significant strides in the field of astronomy and scientific research during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Born on October 2, 1844, in Belfast, Northern Ireland, Grubb's passion for science and engineering was ignited at an early age. Grubb is most famously known for his invention of the periscope, which revolutionized naval warfare by enabling submarines to navigate and observe their surroundings without surfacing. However, his contributions to the world of astronomy and scientific instruments are equally noteworthy. He invented and manufactured some of the finest telescopes of his time, including the 12-inch refracting telescope for the Dearborn Observatory in Chicago and the 20-inch reflector for the Harvard College Observatory. Grubb's innovative designs and meticulous craftsmanship earned him numerous accolades and recognitions, including a knighthood in 1911 for his services to astronomy. His company, Grubb Parsons & Co., continued to produce high-quality telescopes and scientific instruments until it was absorbed by the British National Research Development Corporation in 1946. This photograph of Sir Howard Grubb, taken during his later years, serves as a testament to his remarkable achievements and enduring legacy in the realm of science and engineering. His groundbreaking inventions and innovations continue to inspire and influence scientists and engineers to this day.
