EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving captures Sir Henry Morton Stanley, the renowned Anglo-American journalist and explorer, aboard HMS Industry around 1878. Stanley, dressed in a white helmet, stands on the left side of the image. Surrounding him are some of his African employees, showcasing the diversity of Stanley's expedition team. One of Stanley's followers is in the process of receiving a haircut, adding an element of everyday life to this historical image. At the front right of the image are two Royal Navy seamen, typical of the period, adding to the authenticity of the scene. Stanley, who was known for his determination and courage, had a reputation for employing local people on his expeditions, which was a common practice during the era of European exploration. Stanley's most famous achievement was his search for the missing explorer David Livingstone in Central Africa, which he completed in 1871 with the famous words "Dr. Livingstone, I presume?". This image, taken later in his career, showcases Stanley's continued exploration and leadership, as well as the multicultural makeup of his team. The HMS Industry was a steam-powered Royal Navy vessel, which would have provided the necessary transportation and support for Stanley's expedition. The image offers a glimpse into the past, providing a snapshot of life aboard a late 19th-century exploration vessel and the people who sailed on it.
