EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: Sir Henry Bulwer, English Diplomat (1801-1872) Sir Henry Bulwer, born on March 21, 1801, was a distinguished English diplomat who served his country with great dedication and diplomatic finesse during the mid-19th century. Known by various aliases throughout his life, including William Henry Lytton Earle Bulwer, this full-length, thin, and stooping figure cut an elegant and intellectual figure in the world of diplomacy. Bulwer's diplomatic career began in 1831 when he was appointed as the British Minister Resident in Teheran, Iran. During his time in Iran, he played a crucial role in securing the release of several British subjects who had been imprisoned in Teheran. Bulwer's diplomatic skills were once again put to the test in 1853 when he was sent as the British Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary to the Ottoman Empire. It was during this mission that he played a significant role in the Eastern Crisis, which paved the way for the Crimean War. Bulwer's diplomatic prowess extended beyond Europe and the Middle East. In 1857, he was appointed as the British High Commissioner in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka), where he worked tirelessly to improve the living conditions of the local population and promote economic development. His efforts were recognized by Queen Victoria, who bestowed upon him the title of Sir Henry Bulwer. Despite his many accomplishments, Bulwer's life was not without controversy. He was known for his unconventional personal life, including his unrequited love for the poet Elizabeth Barrett Browning, which was the subject of her famous poem "How Do I Love Thee?" This photograph captures Sir Henry Bulwer in the later years of his life, with his distinctive thin frame and stooping posture, as he pondered the many challenges and triumphs of his diplomatic career. The image serves as a testament to his enduring legacy as a diplomat who left an indelible mark on the history of international relations.
