EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcolored copperplate engraving showcases the vibrant plumage of the Sapphire-rumped Parrotlet, also known as the Purple-tailed Parakeet (Touit purpuratus). The intricate details of the bird's feathers are beautifully captured in this historical artwork, which was published in George Shaw and Frederick Nodder's The Naturalist's Miscellany in the year 1800. The Sapphire-rumped Parrotlet is a small, colorful parrot endemic to Central and South America. The male bird is distinguished by its brilliant sapphire-blue back, rump, and upper tail coverts, while the female has a green back and a purple tail. The rest of their plumage is mainly green, with yellow underparts and red eyes. This engraving is a testament to the meticulous work of the naturalists and engravers of the time, who dedicated themselves to documenting the natural world with great accuracy and artistry. The Naturalist's Miscellany was a popular publication that featured a wide range of natural history subjects, from birds and mammals to reptiles and insects. Polydore Nodder (1768-1844) was a prolific English naturalist and illustrator who collaborated with Shaw on many of his works. Shaw (1751-1813) was a renowned English naturalist, artist, and author, who is best known for his multi-volume work, "The Natural System of Vertebrated Animals." Together, they produced some of the most beautiful and accurate illustrations of their time, which continue to captivate and inspire us today.
