Rue Marechal Foch, Iskenderun, Turkey
Iskenderun (formerly Alexandrette) - a city in the province of Hatay on the Mediterranean coast of Turkey. Rue du Marechal Foch. At the end of the First World War as the Ottoman Empire imploded, the majority of Hatay (including Iskenderun) was occupied by French troops, hence the troops featured on this card and the name of the street. In 1921 the autonomous Sanjak of Alexandretta was established within French-controlled Syria, eventually returning under the Turkish yolk in 1939. Date: circa early 1920s

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the presence of French troops on Rue Marechal Foch in Iskenderun, Turkey, during the early 1920s. Iskenderun, also known as Alexandrette, is a city located on the Mediterranean coast of Turkey in the Hatay province. Following the collapse of the Ottoman Empire at the end of the First World War, the majority of Hatay, including Iskenderun, was occupied by French troops. The soldiers depicted in this image are likely part of the French forces that controlled the region during this period. The name of the street, Rue Marechal Foch, honors Marshal Ferdinand Foch, a French military leader who served as the Supreme Allied Commander during the First World War. Foch played a significant role in the Allied victory and was instrumental in the occupation of Iskenderun and other territories in the region. In 1921, the autonomous Sanjak of Alexandretta was established within French-controlled Syria. However, the region eventually returned under Turkish control in 1939. This photograph offers a glimpse into a pivotal moment in the history of Iskenderun and the broader region, as it transitioned from Ottoman rule to French occupation and ultimately back to Turkish sovereignty. The image presents a fascinating historical record of the military presence in Iskenderun during the early 20th century, and the legacy of the French occupation can still be seen in the city today, including the name of this street.
