Three Scenes from the Historic Royal Visit to Ireland, 1885: A Journey Through Time with the Prince and Princess of Wales Scene One: The Prince of Wales, later King Edward VII, lays the Foundation Stone of a Museum in Dublin In this first scene, we witness a pivotal moment in Irish history as the Prince of Wales, later King Edward VII, performs the ceremonial laying of the foundation stone for a museum in Dublin. Dressed in formal attire, the Prince stands proudly before the crowd, holding a small hammer aloft. The crowd, a sea of top hats and Victorian fashion, cheers and applauds as the future King makes history. The museum, now known as the National Museum of Ireland, would go on to become an important cultural institution in the country. Scene Two: The Princess of Wales, later Queen Alexandra, Names the Alexandra Basin In the second scene, we find the Princess of Wales, later Queen Alexandra, performing another significant act during the royal visit. Here, she stands on the shoreline, overlooking the Alexandra Basin, which she has come to name in honor of her husband. The Princess, dressed in an elegant gown and holding a golden plaque, gazes out at the water as a sailor reads the proclamation. The naming of the basin marked a new era of maritime development in Ireland. Scene Three: The Royal Party Boards the Steamer for Queenstown In the final scene, the royal party makes its way to the dockside to board the steamer for Queenstown (now known as Cobh). The Prince and Princess, along with their entourage, wave to the adoring crowds as they embark on their journey. The steamer, adorned with flags and bunting, sets sail against the backdrop of a picturesque Irish harbor. This moment marked the end of the historic royal visit to Ireland, leaving behind a legacy of cultural exchange and diplomacy that continues to resonate today.
