EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative black-and-white photograph, the second pre-production Dassault Etendard IVM (Improved Veteran Maritime) is seen aboard the French aircraft carrier Clemenceau in 1960. The Etendard IVM was a naval fighter and attack aircraft, designed and manufactured by Dassault Aviation. This particular aircraft, with the serial number 11, was the second of two pre-production Etendard IVMs built, and it underwent extensive testing and evaluation on the Clemenceau. The Etendard IVM was a significant improvement over its predecessor, the Etendard IA, which had entered service in 1956. The IVM featured upgraded avionics, including a radar system that allowed for all-weather capabilities, as well as improved engines and weapons systems. The aircraft was also designed to be more compact, making it easier to operate from the limited space of an aircraft carrier. In this image, we see the Etendard IVM being transported on the flight deck of the Clemenceau, with crew members in the foreground preparing for its next move. The carrier, which had seen service during World War II and the Algerian War, was nearing the end of its career and would be decommissioned in 1962. The Etendard IVM, on the other hand, would go on to serve in the French Navy until the late 1990s, making it a mainstay of French naval aviation for over three decades. This photograph offers a fascinating glimpse into the world of naval aviation in the early 1960s, with the second pre-production Etendard IVM aboard the Clemenceau representing the cutting edge of technology and innovation at the time.
