Aerodrome Fairey Geoff Hanworth Hemsworth Macrobertson Middlesex Preparation Raymond
EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative black-and-white photograph, Raymond John Paul Parer (left) and Geoff E. Hemsworth stand proudly in front of their Fairey Fox I, G-ACXO (formerly J7950), at Hanworth Aerodrome in Middlesex, England, in September 1934. The two aviators are preparing for the upcoming MacRobertson England to Australia Air Race, which was scheduled to take place the following month. The Fairey Fox I, a single-engine, two-seat biplane, was a formidable machine for its time. Its sleek design and advanced features made it a favorite among aviators participating in long-distance races and record-breaking flights. Parer and Hemsworth's aircraft, G-ACXO, had been previously registered as J7950 and was one of several Fairey Fox I planes that were entered into the MacRobertson Race. The MacRobertson England to Australia Air Race, also known as the London-Melbourne Air Race, was an epic event that attracted pilots from around the world. The race covered a distance of approximately 11,000 miles (17,700 kilometers) and was named in honor of Sir MacRobertson, the Governor-General of Australia at the time. The race was a test of endurance, skill, and courage, with participants facing challenging weather conditions, long hours in the cockpit, and the ever-present danger of mechanical failure. Parer and Hemsworth were among the brave souls who dared to take on the challenge. Their determination and preparation are evident in this photograph as they stand before their Fairey Fox I, ready to embark on the adventure of a lifetime. The MacRobertson England to Australia Air Race would go down in history as one of the most significant aviation events of the era, and Parer and Hemsworth's participation in it would become a testament to their passion for flying and their spirit of adventure.
