EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the historic Rowton House at the corner of Kings Cross Road and Calthorpe Street in Central London, a poignant reminder of the past and the enduring issue of poverty and homelessness in the city. Built in 1894, the Rowton House was one of six large, purpose-built hostels or doss houses erected around London by Montagu William Lowry Corry, 1st Viscount Rowton (1838-1903), a renowned philanthropist and charity worker. The Rowton Houses provided low-cost shelter for working men, offering a much-needed alternative to overcrowded and unsanitary workhouses and the streets. The Victorian-era Rowton House, with its ornate architectural details and imposing presence, stands as a testament to Lord Rowton's benevolence and his commitment to improving the lives of the less fortunate. The image, taken in the late 1890s, portrays a bustling scene of men gathered outside the hostel, likely waiting to check in or socialize with one another. The photograph offers a glimpse into the daily lives of working men during this era, highlighting the importance of community and the need for affordable housing. The Rowton Houses played a significant role in the history of homelessness and poverty in London, providing temporary shelter for thousands of men until the mid-20th century. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the past and the ongoing struggle to address the complex issue of homelessness in our society.
