EDITORS COMMENTS
This enchanting photograph captures a moment from Queen Charlotte's Ball in 1934, an elegant and time-honored tradition of London society. In the heart of the scene, Her Royal Highness Princess Arthur of Connaught, formerly Princess Alexandra of Fife, advances towards the grand cake, surrounded by the splendor of the event. The Princess, dressed in regal attire, is greeted by a sea of curtseying debutantes, maids-in-waiting, and dames d'honneur, all dressed in white, reflecting the longstanding custom of the debutante season. Queen Charlotte's Ball was a highlight of the social calendar, revived in 1925 by Lady Howard de Walden to raise funds for the Queen Charlotte's Maternity Hospital. The event paid tribute to the traditions of George III's Queen, whose birthday celebrations inspired the debutante season. The cake, adorned with a large number of candles, symbolized the number of years since the Queen's birth. The ritualistic curtseying of the debutantes, a testament to the rich history and tradition of the event, is a sight to behold. The elegance, grace, and unity of the young women, dressed in their debutante gowns, add to the allure of this moment in time. This photograph offers a glimpse into the charm and grandeur of the 1930s, a time when tradition and society intertwined to create unforgettable memories.
