Consort Princesses Queens Royals Teck
EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite portrait captures the youthful beauty and regal grace of Princess Mary of Wales, later known as Queen Mary of Teck, in the late 1800s. The Princess, who would later become the consort to King George V and the first queen of the United Kingdom and the British Dominions, is depicted in the portrait with an elegant and refined demeanor, wearing a simple yet elegant gown and a diamond diadem in her hair. Princess Mary was born on May 26, 1867, in Kensington Palace, London, to the Duke and Duchess of Teck. She was the granddaughter of King George III of Württemberg and Princess Theresa of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. Mary's mother, Princess Frances, was the eldest daughter of Prince Albert, Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, and Queen Victoria's eldest daughter, Princess Victoria, Princess Royal. Mary's engagement to the future King George V was announced in July 1893, and they were married on July 6, 1893, at the Chapel Royal, St. James's Palace. The couple went on to have six children: George VI, Edward VIII, Princess Mary, Prince Henry, Princess Elizabeth, and Princess Margaret. Queen Mary was known for her dedication to her family, her charitable work, and her love of fashion. She was a patron of the arts and supported various charities, including the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and the British Red Cross. Her fashion sense was also influential, and she popularized the wearing of the coronation robes as everyday clothing. This beautiful portrait, taken in the late 1800s, captures the essence of a young and vibrant Princess Mary, who would go on to become a beloved and respected Queen consort of the United Kingdom and the British Dominions.
