EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, we find the de Havilland DHC-1 Chipmunk aircraft with the registration number G-AOSU (msn 0217, ex-RAF WB722) at Newcastle Airport. This image transports us back to 1977, a pivotal year in the history of this iconic aircraft. At the time, G-AOSU was undergoing conversion to the Supermunk prototype at Staverton, with a powerful 180hp Lycoming engine installed. However, the conversion work was abruptly halted. The Royal Air Force Gliding and Soaring Association (RAFGSA) seized the opportunity and purchased not only this aircraft but also the essential jigs, tooling, paperwork, and conversion rights. The OSU (Old Straight Up) Chipmunk was then completed, marking the beginning of a series of further conversions carried out by the RAFGSA for use as glider tugs at their clubs. This photograph offers a glimpse into the rich aviation history of the 1960s, a decade marked by innovation and progress in the field of aeronautical transport. The de Havilland DHC-1 Chipmunk, with its distinctive design and versatile capabilities, played a significant role in the development of aviation during this period. Today, it continues to be a cherished symbol of the golden age of flight. This photograph, captured at Newcastle Airport, is a testament to the enduring allure of aviation and the stories that lie within the history of each aircraft. The de Havilland DHC-1 Chipmunk, G-AOSU, stands as a reminder of the past while continuing to contribute to the ever-evolving world of flight.
