EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking portrait captures the regal presence of Carlos I (1863-1908), the last monarch of the House of Braganza and the reigning king of Portugal from 1889 until his tragic assassination in 1908. Born on May 5, 1863, in Lisbon, Carlos I was the eldest son of King Luis I and Queen Maria Pia of Savoy. He ascended to the throne at the young age of 22 following his father's abdication. During Carlos I's reign, Portugal underwent significant political and social changes. He implemented several constitutional reforms, including the establishment of a parliament and the expansion of civil liberties. However, his rule was not without controversy. Carlos I was known for his authoritarian tendencies and his support of the colonial empire, which led to tensions with the growing nationalist movements in Portugal and its colonies. This photograph was taken in 1902, during a time of relative peace and stability in Portugal. Carlos I is depicted here in his formal attire, wearing the Order of the Tower and the Sword, the highest decoration in the Portuguese military. His stern expression and piercing gaze convey a sense of determination and resolve. Tragically, Carlos I's reign came to an end on February 1, 1908, when he was assassinated in Lisbon by an anarchist named Alves dos Reis. The assassination marked the end of the monarchy in Portugal and ushered in a new era of political instability and turmoil. Despite the circumstances of his death, Carlos I remains an important figure in Portuguese history, remembered for his efforts to modernize the country and maintain its colonial empire.
