EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving depicts Sigismund III Vasa (1566-1632), a distinguished monarch of the 16th and 17th centuries who ruled over the united Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth from 1587 to 1632. Born in Sweden as a member of the Vasa dynasty, Sigismund later became King of Sweden from 1592 to 1599, Grand Duke of Finland, and Duke of Estonia and Livonia. He is depicted here in regal attire, wearing a golden collar adorned with the Order of the White Eagle and the Order of the Golden Fleece. Sigismund's Catholic faith is evident from the cross he wears around his neck. The engraving, created by Lemaitre, Vernier, and Massard in 1840, captures the grandeur and chivalry of the European monarchs of the modern age. Sigismund's goatee and moustache, along with his fashionable ruff, are also distinct features of the portrait. Sigismund's reign was marked by significant political and cultural achievements, including the Union of Lublin in 1569, which united Poland and Lithuania into a single state. This engraving is a testament to the rich history and enduring legacy of Sigismund III Vasa and the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.
