EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking photograph captures King George V (1865-1936) in a moment of triumph and relief following the end of the First World War in 1918. The monarch, dressed in his full military regalia, wears a broad smile on his face as he gazes out at the camera with a confident and resolute expression. The image was taken by renowned British photographer Grenville Collins, who captured the King's genuine happiness and sense of victory in this powerful portrait. King George V had assumed the throne in 1910, following the death of his father, King Edward VII. He led the British people through the darkest days of the First World War, providing a sense of stability and unity during a time of great turmoil and uncertainty. The war had taken a heavy toll on the country, with millions of lives lost and countless more affected by the devastation. However, in November 1918, the Allied Powers finally emerged victorious, and King George V was able to share in the joy and relief of the British people. This photograph, taken shortly after the signing of the Armistice, is a testament to the King's leadership and resilience during wartime. The image of a smiling, victorious monarch, dressed in military uniform and wearing a cap, became an iconic symbol of the end of the war and the beginning of a new era for Britain.
