EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the intimate moment when German composer Richard Wagner (1813-1883) serenaded his wife Cosima and their newborn son, Siegfried, in their home on the morning of February 24, 1870. The scene unfolds at the foot of the grand staircase of their villa, Wagner's residence in Tribschen on the shores of Lake Lucerne in Switzerland. Wagner, known for his groundbreaking operas such as "The Ring Cycle" and "Tristan und Isolde," conducted an orchestra of just 30 musicians, including brass and percussion, who were hidden away in various rooms of the villa. The musicians played his composition, "Siegfried Idyll," a birthday gift for Cosima, who was turning 33 that day. The image of Wagner serenading his family is a poignant one, as it marked a turning point in his life. After years of financial struggles, exile, and scandal, Wagner had finally found stability and happiness with his wife and their children. The composition of "Siegfried Idyll" also represented a new phase in Wagner's career, as it was his first major work written after his return to Germany in 1865. The photograph, taken by an unknown photographer, is a testament to the deep love and devotion between Wagner and Cosima, as well as the power of music to evoke emotion and bring people together. It remains an enduring symbol of the romantic and artistic spirit of the late 19th century.
