EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the moment of departure for the Crusaders on their journey to the Holy Land, circa 1100. The crusaders, dressed in their armor and carrying their belongings, are seen boarding ships and galleys from the shore. The galleys, with their oars raised, are being rowed out to the larger sailing ship anchored in the bay. The crew on the sailing ship are busy stowing away the crusaders' cargo, preparing for the long voyage ahead. The Crusades, a series of military campaigns sanctioned by the Catholic Church, began in the late 11th century with the primary objective of recapturing the Holy Land from Muslim rule. Thousands of European soldiers, knights, and pilgrims embarked on these journeys, often facing great hardships and danger along the way. The ships in this scene reflect the diverse range of vessels used during the Crusades. The galleys, with their long, narrow hulls and oars, were ideal for navigating the Mediterranean Sea and were commonly used for transporting troops and supplies. The larger sailing ship, with its sails raised, would have been used for longer voyages across the open sea. This photograph offers a glimpse into the logistical challenges of mounting a Crusade, as well as the determination and courage of those who answered the call to defend the Holy Land.
