EDITORS COMMENTS
This lithograph, titled "The Tooth-billed Pigeon and Kindred Species," is an exquisite work of art from the illustrious publication "The Dodo and its Kindred," created by renowned naturalists Hugh Edwin Strickland and Alexander Gordon Melville in 1848. The print showcases a fascinating assemblage of pigeons and doves, each represented with remarkable detail and accuracy. At the center of the image stands the Critically Endangered Tooth-billed Pigeon (Didunculus strigirostris, 1 & 2), with its distinctive large, curved beak, which resembles that of a parrot. This unique bird, native to the remote islands of the Indian Ocean, is one of the rarest pigeons in the world, with fewer than 250 individuals remaining. To the left of the Tooth-billed Pigeon, we find the Bruce's Green Pigeon (Treron waalia, 3 & 5), a beautiful species endemic to Madagascar, with vibrant green plumage and a striking orange eye. The Levaillant's Dove (Verrulia carunculata, 4), unfortunately, is an extinct species, with the last known sighting reported in the late 1800s. Its image serves as a poignant reminder of the fragility of the natural world. In the background, we notice the Squatter Pigeon (Geophaps scripta, 6), a ground-dwelling bird native to Australia, with its stocky build and short, stout legs. The inclusion of this species adds to the rich diversity showcased in this print. This hand-colored lithograph, produced by Tuffen West, offers a glimpse into the natural history of these intriguing birds, highlighting their unique characteristics and the importance of conservation efforts to protect endangered species. The intricate details and vibrant colors bring these birds to life, making this a must-have for any natural history or art enthusiast's collection.
