EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handfinished chromolithograph depicts various species of Swallow-wort, or Asclepias, including the Tuberous-rooted Swallow-wort (A. tuberosa), Water Silk-weed (A. incarnata), and Decumbent Swallow-wort (A. decumbens). The intricately detailed illustration is based on an original drawing by Jane Loudon for her book "Mrs. Jane Loudon's Ladies Flower Garden of Ornamental Perennials," published in London in 1849 by William S. Orr. The illustration was later brought to life through the chromolithograph process by Henry Noel Humphreys. Swallow-worts are part of the milkweed family, and are native to North America. They are known for their unique tuberous roots and beautiful flowers, which range in color from pink to purple to white. The Tuberous-rooted Swallow-wort, also known as Orange Milkweed, is particularly notable for its bright orange-red roots and vibrant orange-yellow flowers. Water Silk-weed, or Pink Milkweed, is characterized by its pink or rose-colored flowers, while Decumbent Swallow-wort features trailing stems and white or pink blooms. This Victorian-era illustration showcases the beauty and intricacy of these ornamental perennials, which were popular in ladies' gardens during the 19th century. The use of the chromolithograph process allowed for the creation of detailed and vibrant prints, making them highly sought-after collectibles for botanical enthusiasts and gardeners alike. Today, these species of Swallow-wort continue to captivate us with their unique beauty and historical significance.
