Sketch of Old Shades PH, Whitehall, London

Sketch of Old Shades PH, Whitehall, London. The main side of the print (shown here) depicts: Sketch of the pub. The back of the print (available on request) details: Nothing for the Old Shades, Whitehall, London SW1A 2BX. As of July 2018. For many many years it was leased to Henekey s, the wine shippers, who also had what is now Sam Smiths pub the Cittie of York (sic) in High Holborn. It was still leased to Henekeys up to the time Charrington took it back to management but the photo suggests it was when that was taken as well, given the display window in the centre of the front which is full of bottles of wine. Picture was probably taken around 1925.30, judging partly by the solid.tyred bus in front of the pub

EDITORS COMMENTS
This sketch depicts the Old Shades Public House, located on Whitehall in London, as it appeared around 1925-30. The Old Shades, with its distinctive red brick facade and ornate windows, was once leased to Henekey's, a prominent wine shipping company. At the time, Henekey's also managed the Cittie of York pub in High Holborn. The image reveals a bustling scene outside the pub, with a solid-tyred bus parked in front, adding to the sense of activity. The display window in the center of the pub is filled with bottles of wine, a testament to Henekey's connection to the establishment. The Old Shades, a cherished local watering hole, holds a rich history and is a fascinating glimpse into London's past. This evocative sketch, now available as a print from Mary Evans Picture Library, offers a unique perspective on the pub's character and charm. For those with a fondness for history, architecture, or simply a love for the pub culture of yesteryear, this print is an essential addition to any collection. Address: Old Shades Public House, Whitehall, London SW1A 2BX.
