EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored copperplate engraving, created by Miss Massard after an illustration by Jean-Gabriel Pretre in 1825, showcases a fascinating encounter between three distinct shark species: the Six-gilled Shark (Hexanchus griseus), the Spiny Dogfish (Squalus acanthias), and the Don Pedro Shark, also known as the Angular Roughshark (Oxynotus centrina). The Six-gilled Shark, a near-threatened species, is depicted with its distinctive hexagonal gills, which provide an additional pair compared to the typical five gills found in most sharks. This adaptation allows the shark to survive in oxygen-poor environments. The Six-gilled Shark's body is elongated and grayish in color. The Spiny Dogfish, a vulnerable species, is easily recognized by its distinctive spines along its back and dorsal fin. This shark is small in size, with a length of up to 3 feet, and is commonly found in the North Atlantic and North Pacific Oceans. The Angular Roughshark, or Don Pedro Shark, is a vulnerable species with a unique appearance. Its body is grayish-brown, and it features rough, angular skin, giving it its name. The Angular Roughshark is found in the Atlantic and Indian Oceans and can grow up to 3.3 feet long. This beautiful engraving not only showcases the natural history of these fascinating shark species but also highlights the intricate details of their anatomies. The use of hand-coloring adds a vibrant and lifelike quality to the image, making it a true work of art. The illustration was originally published in Bernard Germain de Lacepede's Natural History of Oviparous Quadrupeds, Snakes, Fish and Cetaceans, published in Paris in 1825.
