EDITORS COMMENTS
Siam Gamboge, or Hanbury's Garcinia (Garcinia hanburyi), is depicted in this stunning hand-colored lithograph by Hanhart, based on a botanical illustration by David Blair. Published in Robert Bentley and Henry Trimen's "Medicinal Plants" in 1880, this illustration showcases the intricacies of this exotic plant native to Southeast Asia. The Siam Gamboge tree, also known as Hanburii or Gambojia, is a medium-sized evergreen tree that grows in the forests of Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia. The tree is renowned for its resin, which is extracted from the bark and is commonly known as gamboge or gum gamboge. This resin has been used in traditional medicine for centuries due to its various therapeutic properties. The illustration captures the tree's unique features, including its oblong leaves, serrated edges, and the distinctive red-brown resin-filled pods that form on the trunk and branches. The lithograph also highlights the tree's bark, which is shown to be rough and deeply furrowed, providing a stark contrast to the glossy sheen of the resin. Garcinia hanburyi was believed to have several medicinal uses, including as an anti-inflammatory, antipyretic, and antiseptic. The resin was also used externally to treat wounds, ulcers, and skin conditions. In traditional Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine, it was used to treat digestive disorders, fever, and joint pain. This beautiful and intricately detailed lithograph is a testament to the rich biodiversity of the natural world and the importance of documenting and preserving the knowledge of medicinal plants for future generations.
