EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: Byzantine Emperor Justinian II: A Regal Portrait from the 17th Century This portrait depicts Emperor Justinian II of the Byzantine Empire, also known as Flavius Iustinianus, Rhinotmetos, or Rhinotmetus, in all his imperial splendor. The image, created as a copperplate engraving, is taken from Abraham Bogaert's seminal work "De Roomsche Monarchy," published in Utrecht in 1697. Justinian II ruled the Byzantine Empire from 685 to 695 and again from 705 to 711. His reign was marked by significant military campaigns, political intrigue, and religious controversies. This portrait, however, presents a regal and imposing figure, with the emperor wearing a richly decorated robe adorned with gold and jewels, symbolizing his wealth and power. The portrait also features Justinian II's distinctive physical attribute - a prominent nose, which earned him the nickname Rhinotmetos or Rhinotmetus, meaning "nose-cut" in Greek. This feature is evident in the engraving, making it an instantly recognizable representation of the emperor. The portrait is part of a larger series of engravings in "De Roomsche Monarchy," which chronicled the history of the Roman and Byzantine monarchs, from the early Caesars to the contemporary rulers of the 17th century. The work was a testament to the enduring fascination with the classical past and the continuity of imperial power from ancient Rome to the Byzantine Empire. This evocative portrait of Byzantine Emperor Justinian II serves as a reminder of the rich history and cultural legacy of the Byzantine Empire, which continues to captivate scholars, artists, and enthusiasts alike.
