EDITORS COMMENTS
Step back in time with this evocative 1950s photograph of the Royal Oak Public House in Romford, Essex. Located in the heart of this historic town, the Royal Oak was a beloved local watering hole that has since been lost to progress. The image captures the corner view of the charming pub, its red brick facade adorned with intricate woodwork and the iconic "Royal Oak" sign proudly displayed above the entrance. The Royal Oak was a cherished establishment, having been in operation for many years under the management of the Charrington and Company Limited. The pub, with its inviting atmosphere and friendly service, was a gathering place for the community, where friends and neighbors would meet for a pint and a chat. Unfortunately, by July 2018, the Royal Oak had been demolished to make way for the Romford Ring Road. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the pub's existence and the history it held within its walls. The back of the print provides details of the location, address, and date of the photograph, allowing us to hold onto the memory of this once-beloved local institution. The 1950s were a time of change, and this photograph captures a moment in history when the traditional pub culture of Romford was still thriving. The Royal Oak may no longer be standing, but its legacy lives on through images like this one, which offer a glimpse into the past and remind us of the importance of preserving our local history.
