EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisitely hand-colored engraving depicts the Pampas Deer, Ozotoceros bezoarticus, also known as the Guazuti deer or the Campestris deer. The image is based on a drawing made from life by the renowned English naturalist and illustrator, Charles Hamilton Smith, and was engraved by Thomas Landseer. The engraving is taken from Edward Griffiths' seminal work, "The Animal Kingdom" published by Whittaker in London in 1827, under the direction of the esteemed French naturalist, Baron Georges Cuvier. The Pampas Deer is native to the grasslands of South America, specifically in Argentina, Uruguay, and southern Brazil. This ruminant species is easily recognizable by its short, stocky body, large ears, and distinctive stripes on its sides. The deer's coat is a reddish-brown color, with white underparts, and it has a short, curved horn on each side of its head. The Pampas Deer is an important species in the natural history of South America, and its inclusion in Baron Cuvier's influential work reflects its scientific significance during the early 19th century. The engraving provides a detailed and accurate representation of the animal, showcasing the skill and artistry of both Smith and Landseer. The intricate shading and attention to detail in the fur texture, as well as the lifelike depiction of the deer's facial features, make this a stunning and valuable addition to any natural history or zoology collection.
