EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handfinished chromolithograph by Henry Noel Humphreys, after an illustration by Jane Loudon, showcases a stunning collection of Milfoil and Marshallia species. The illustration is taken from Mrs. Jane Loudon's "Ladies Flower Garden of Ornamental Perennials," published in London in 1849 by William S. Orr. The Milfoil family (Achillea) is represented by several beautiful species. The Pink-flowered Milfoil (Achillea milfolium) is depicted in the center, its delicate pink blooms surrounded by lush, green foliage. To its left, the Golden Yarrow (Achillea tomentosa) displays its golden-yellow flowers and silvery-gray leaves. The Clavenas Silvery-leaved Milfoil (Achillea clavenae) is shown at the bottom right, its silvery-white flowers contrasting with its silver-gray leaves. The Tufted Marshallia (Marshallia caespitosa) is depicted at the top right, its rosette of pinkish-purple flowers adorned with white centers. This species is also known as the Tufted Marsh Marigold or the Pink Lady's Slipper. The intricate details of each plant are captured beautifully in this lithograph, with the vibrant colors and fine lines bringing the illustration to life. The use of chromolithography, a popular printing technique of the time, adds depth and richness to the image. Jane Loudon (1807-1858) was a renowned English botanist, horticulturist, and writer. She was a pioneer in the field of gardening literature and is known for her many gardening books, including "The Ladies' Companion in Horticulture," which was published in 1845. Henry Noel Humphreys (1805-1873) was a skilled lithographer and illustrator who collaborated with many prominent botanists and authors of the time to produce high-quality botanical illustrations.
