The illustration was engraved by Corsi, with drawings by Jean Gabriel Pretre and direction by Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin. The illustration features two species of fish: the Longtail Croaker (Lonchurus lanceolatus) and the Stone Bass or Meagre (Argyrosomus regius). The Longtail Croaker, also known as the Longfin Croaker or Longtail Drum, is a marine fish found in the western Atlantic Ocean and the eastern Pacific Ocean. It is characterized by its long, slender body and distinctive long, pointed tail. The Stone Bass, also known as the Shi Drum, Umbrina, Cirrosa, Cingle, Zingel, Ombrina, Barbuta, Cinglo, or Jeannette, is a Mediterranean and Black Sea fish with a grayish-brown color and a distinctive barbel under its lower jaw. Turpin (1775-1840) was a French botanical illustrator considered one of the greatest of the 19th century.
