EDITORS COMMENTS
This haunting image captures the aftermath of a skirmish in the Khyber Pass, a historic mountain pass linking Pakistan and Afghanistan. The pass has served as a vital trade route between Central and South Asia for centuries, as well as a strategic military location. This photograph is believed to date from the conclusion of the Third Anglo-Afghan War in 1919. The dead Frontier Raider, dressed in traditional Afghan attire, lies in the dusty terrain near Nowshera in the North-West Frontier Province. The war, which lasted from 1919 to 1920, was a result of tensions between the British Indian Army and Afghan forces over border disputes and the presence of British troops in Afghan territory. The raider, with his determined expression even in death, is a poignant reminder of the fierce battles that have taken place in this region throughout history. The Khyber Pass, with its rugged terrain and rich cultural heritage, continues to be a complex and contested borderland between Pakistan and Afghanistan, making this image all the more significant.
