EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured copperplate engraving by Roberto Freschi, taken from Giulio Ferrario's Ancient and Modern Costumes of all the Peoples of the World published in Florence, Italy, in 1843, showcases a Khoikhoi woman of Angola. The Khoikhoi, also known as the Hottentots, are an ethnic group indigenous to southern Africa, primarily residing in present-day Namibia and South Africa. The woman in the image is adorned in traditional attire, which includes a fur cape, a conical hat, a bow, a necklace, and a beaded apron. The fur cape, made from the skins of local animals, served as both a protective layer against the harsh climate and a symbol of status. The conical hat, known as a "otjimba," was made from plant fibers and protected the wearer from the sun. The bow, likely made from wood or reeds, was a practical tool used for hunting and self-defense. The necklace and beaded apron are intricately decorated with colorful beads, which were traditionally made from ostrich eggs or imported glass. These adornments were not only aesthetically pleasing but also held cultural significance, as they were believed to bring good luck and protection. This engraving offers a glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of the Khoikhoi people and provides insight into their traditional attire and way of life during the mid-19th century. It is a testament to the diversity and beauty of the world's various ethnic groups and serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving and celebrating cultural traditions.
