EDITORS COMMENTS
Fools Parsley: Aethusa cynapium, also known as Fools Cicely or Poison Parsley, is a fascinating and intriguing plant with a rich history in herbal medicine and folklore. This beautiful handcoloured lithograph by Hanhart, after a botanical illustration by David Blair, was published in Robert Bentley and Henry Trimen's "Medicinal Plants" in London, 1880. Fools Parsley is a low-growing plant that resembles parsley but is actually unrelated. Its leaves and roots have a distinctive, pleasant aroma reminiscent of parsley, carrot, and anise. However, all parts of the plant are toxic, containing alkaloids that can cause gastrointestinal symptoms and neurological effects if ingested. Despite its toxicity, Fools Parsley has a long history of medicinal use. It was used in traditional European herbal medicine to treat various ailments, including gastrointestinal issues, menstrual cramps, and even epilepsy. The plant was also believed to have aphrodisiac properties and was used in love potions. The plant's common name "Fools Parsley" comes from its use in folklore as a symbol of foolishness and deception. It was believed that if a person ate Fools Parsley on April Fool's Day, they would be fooled into believing they were pregnant. This stunning botanical illustration captures the intricate details of the plant's leaves, flowers, and roots, providing a glimpse into the rich history and folklore surrounding Fools Parsley. The handcolouring adds depth and vibrancy to the image, making it a beautiful addition to any botanical collection.
