EDITORS COMMENTS
In this hand-colored copperplate engraving, an English gentleman stands reverently before the tomb of Laura, the beloved muse of the great Italian poet Petrarch. The scene unfolds in the Chapelle des Sade, a convent of the Cordeliers in the historic city of Avignon, Southern France. The Englishman, dressed in the elegant attire of the early 19th century, wears a garter on his leg, a symbol of his status and membership in the gentry. His hand rests on the tomb, as if in prayer or in awe, while his eyes are filled with a mixture of admiration, reverence, and perhaps a hint of longing. The tomb of Laura, Laura de Sade or Laure des Noves, is located in the convent where she spent her final years as a blessed virgin. The scene is reminiscent of a religious pilgrimage, with the Englishman's pious demeanor and the ornate, almost sacred, surroundings. The tomb itself is adorned with intricate carvings and religious symbols, including the image of St. Nepomucen, the patron saint of water and bridges. The scene is further enriched by the presence of nuns and monks, who attend to the relics and curiosities of the convent's cabinet of wonders. The Englishman's gaze is drawn to the lot numbered "Laura" on the auctioneer's table, a reminder of the commercial value of the relics. However, his expression remains unchanged, as if he is oblivious to the auction taking place around him. Instead, he seems lost in thought, perhaps contemplating the enduring power of love and the beauty of the past. The engraving, based on an illustration by Thomas Rowlandson from Moritz August von Thummel's "Reise in die mittglichen Provinzen van Frankreich," was published in London in 1821 by Rudolph Ackermann. The image, a testament to the enduring allure of travel and the romanticism of the past, continues to captivate viewers more than two centuries later.
