EDITORS COMMENTS
In this hand-colored copperplate engraving by Andrea Bernieri, three prominent Egyptian deities, Horus, Harpocrates, and Typhon (also known as Set), are depicted alongside the vulture goddess Nehbet. This image is taken from Giulio Ferrario's "Costumes Antique and Modern of All Peoples" (Il Costume Antico e Moderno di Tutti i Popoli), published in Florence in 1843. Horus, the ancient Egyptian god of the sky, kingship, and the sun's power, is shown as a falcon-headed deity with a crown adorned with the solar disk and the uraeus serpent. He is often associated with the pharaoh and the protector of Egypt. Harpocrates, the god of silence, wisdom, and healing, is represented as a young god with the symbol of the Ankh, the Egyptian hieroglyph for life, in his hand. He is also depicted with his left hand pressed against his lips, symbolizing silence, and his right hand holding a lotus flower, which represents rebirth and renewal. Typhon (Set), the god of chaos, storms, and the desert, is shown as a powerful serpent or a man with the head of a pig or a goat. He is often depicted as the antagonist of Horus and the god Osiris. In this image, Typhon is shown with his serpentine form, coiled and ready to strike. Nehbet, the goddess of the vulture, is depicted as a vulture or a woman with the head of a vulture. She was the protector of Lower Egypt and the goddess of motherhood, childbirth, and nursing. She is often shown with her wings spread protectively over the pharaoh or the gods. This engraving is a testament to the rich cultural heritage of ancient Egypt and the fascination it continues to hold for scholars, artists, and people around the world. It provides a glimpse into the mythology, customs, and manners of a civilization that has left an indelible mark on human history.
