EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcoloured copperplate engraving depicts the enigmatic and extinct Dodo, Raphus cucullatus. The Dodo was a flightless bird endemic to the island of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean. Discovered by Dutch sailors in the late 15th century, the Dodo quickly became a source of fascination for European naturalists due to its unique appearance and size, with some specimens reaching up to 36 inches in length and weighing as much as 50 pounds. The Dodo's distinctive features include its large, round body, short neck, and wings that were reduced to small vestigial stubs. Despite its size and apparent lack of ability to fly, the Dodo was a strong swimmer and agile on land. However, its lack of fear of humans and its inability to fly made it an easy target for hunters, leading to its rapid extinction within a few decades of its discovery. This beautiful engraving was created by J. Pass and published in Ebenezer Sibly's Universal System of Natural History in 1801. The intricate details of the Dodo's feathers, beak, and legs are expertly rendered, showcasing the skill of the engraver and the high-quality production techniques of the time. The handcolouring adds depth and vibrancy to the image, making it a captivating representation of this iconic and tragically extinct bird.
