EDITORS COMMENTS
This image is taken from John Curtis's seminal work, "British Entomology," specifically Plate 446, published between 1824 and 1839. The plate showcases an intricately detailed illustration of the Carabus violaceus, also known as the Portland Carabus or Carabus exasperatus. This large, vibrant beetle belongs to the ground beetle family (Carabidae) within the Coleoptera order. The Carabus violaceus is easily recognizable by its distinctive purple-blue elytra, or wing cases, and its elongated, slender body. The illustration is accompanied by a lush, botanical specimen of Atropa belladonna, also known as Deadly Nightshade. This poisonous plant is native to Europe, North Africa, and western Asia, and is characterized by its bell-shaped, purple-black flowers and glossy, green leaves. The plant's toxic properties have made it a subject of fascination and caution throughout history. John Curtis, FLS, was a prominent English botanist and entomologist who dedicated his career to documenting the natural world. His meticulously crafted plates, produced by skilled engravers and illustrators, remain an invaluable resource for the study of British insects and plants to this day. This particular plate, with its stunning depiction of the Carabus violaceus and Atropa belladonna, offers a glimpse into the rich biodiversity of the 19th century British Isles.
