EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored lithograph depicts the Beadle of the University of Paris, a figure of great importance in the academic community during the 16th century. The Beadle, also known as the Bedeau in French, was responsible for maintaining order and discipline within the university. He wore a distinctive costume that set him apart from other university officials and students. In this image, the Beadle is shown wearing a long, flowing robe with a fur-lined collar, a sign of his high status. He holds a staff topped with a bell, which he would use to call students to class or to maintain order. The bell also served as a symbol of his authority. The Beadle's hat, known as a capot, is adorned with a tassel and a badge displaying the emblem of the University of Paris. This beautiful lithograph was drawn and produced by Alexandre Massard, based on a portrait in the gallery portfolio of Roger de Gaignières, published by Le Bibliophile Jacob under the title "Costumes Historiques de la France" in 1852. The intricate details of the Beadle's costume and the rich colors used in the lithograph provide a fascinating glimpse into the academic attire of the 16th century in Paris. The image captures the dignity and importance of the Beadle's role in the university community, making it a valuable historical document and an aesthetically pleasing work of art.
