In this poignant and historic image, Agrippina the Elder, dressed in mourning attire, steps onto the shores of Brundisium (Brindisi) in Southern Italy, carrying the ashes of her beloved husband, Germanicus. The year is AD 19, and the scene unfolds against the backdrop of the Roman Empire at a time of great turmoil and loss. Germanicus, a renowned Roman general and stepson of Emperor Tiberius, had been a popular figure in Rome and throughout the empire.
