EDITORS COMMENTS
This chromolithograph showcases a stunning collection of Acantharia Radiolaria protozoa species, intricately illustrated by Ernst Haeckel and brought to life through the masterful techniques of Adolf Glitsch. The image features seven distinct species of Acantharia Radiolaria, each displaying unique and intricate structures that define their identities. At the center, the Xiphacantha species 1 and Stauracantha spinulosa 2 are depicted. Xiphacantha boasts long, slender spines that radiate from its central body, while Stauracantha displays a star-like arrangement of shorter spines. To the left, the Phyllostauridae species 3 is illustrated, characterized by its leaf-like appendages. Moving on, the Pristacantha polyodon 4 is shown with its distinctive quadrifurcate arms, while the Lithopteridae species 5 is characterized by its dome-shaped test and spiny projections. Further to the right, the Gigartaconidae species 6 and 7 are depicted, with the former exhibiting a complex, branched structure and the latter displaying a spherical test adorned with spines. This artwork, taken from Ernst Haeckel's seminal work, "Art Forms in Nature," published in Leipzig, Germany, in 1904, offers a mesmerizing glimpse into the microscopic world of Radiolaria protozoa. Haeckel's meticulous illustrations, combined with Glitsch's expert chromolithography, result in an enduring testament to the beauty and complexity of nature.
