44th Regiment at Gundamuck
In 1841 the 44th was in Kabul where uprising endangered the garrison. Constantly attacked, without shelter or food, the force waded in deep snow through narrow passes for four days trying to reach Jellalabad. As rear guard, a stand was made by 20 men at Gundamuck. Lieutenant Thomas Souter tore the Regimental Colour from its pike and wrapped it round his body. The Afghans saw the silk and thought it the waistcoat of a person of high rank suitable for ransom

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the desperate struggle of the 44th Regiment during the Kabul uprising of 1841. Amidst constant attacks and without shelter or food, the British garrison was forced to wade through deep snow in narrow passes for four days in an attempt to reach safety in Jellalabad. As the rear guard, a small group of 20 men held their ground at Gundamuck, a strategic position that would buy precious time for the rest of the force to retreat. In the midst of the chaos, Lieutenant Thomas Souter made a brave decision. With the enemy closing in, he tore the Regimental Colour from its pike and wrapped it around his body, using the silk as a makeshift disguise. The Afghans, seeing the valuable silk, mistakenly believed it to be the waistcoat of a person of high rank, making Souter an attractive target for ransom. This daring move allowed the lieutenant and his men to blend in with their attackers, buying valuable time and ultimately contributing to the survival of the 44th Regiment. This haunting photograph, taken from the Mary Evans Picture Library, serves as a poignant reminder of the bravery and resourcefulness displayed by the soldiers of the 44th Regiment during this pivotal moment in British military history.
