EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative black-and-white portrait, taken in 1917, we see the captivating young face of Marie Novello, a Welsh pianist whose life and music career were tragically cut short by the cruel hand of fate. Born in 1898, Novello was a child prodigy who began performing in public at an early age. Her exceptional talent did not go unnoticed, and she was fortunate enough to study under the esteemed piano teacher Theodor Leschetizky, one of the most influential music teachers of the time. Novello's adoption by her piano teacher, who was also the mother of the renowned composer and actor Ivor Novello, further solidified her connection to the world of music and the arts. Her early years were marked by a prolific discography, with numerous recordings for a second-rank English label. Her promise as a rising star was about to be realized, as she was on the cusp of signing a contract with one of the major English recording labels. However, Novello's dreams were shattered when she was diagnosed with throat cancer at the age of 29. Despite undergoing numerous surgeries and treatments, her health continued to decline, and she passed away in 1928, leaving behind a legacy of beautiful music and a profound impact on those who had heard her perform. This portrait captures the essence of a young woman whose life was devoted to the pursuit of musical excellence. Her expressive eyes and poised posture convey a deep sense of focus and determination, while her delicate features and refined elegance speak to her innate grace and beauty. This image serves as a poignant reminder of the fleeting nature of life and the enduring power of music to touch our hearts and souls.
