1790 1830 Baron Bolton Catherine Thurlow

EDITORS COMMENTS
Mary Catherine Bolton, later known as Lady Mary Thurlow, was a prominent English actress of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Born in London in 1790, she made her theatrical debut at a young age, quickly gaining recognition for her talent and beauty. By the turn of the century, she had become a leading lady at Drury Lane Theatre, where she performed in a range of roles, from tragic heroines to comedic characters. In 1812, Mary Catherine married Edward Thurlow, who was created a baronet in 1814 and later raised to the peerage as Baron Thurlow in 1827. The couple's marriage was a happy one, and they had several children together. Mary Catherine continued to act after her marriage, but she also devoted herself to her role as a wife and mother. This elegant portrait of Mary Catherine, taken around 1810, captures her in the prime of her career. She is dressed in the height of Regency fashion, with a flowing white gown and a delicate lace shawl draped over her shoulders. Her expressive face and piercing gaze convey a sense of intelligence and passion, making it easy to see why she was such a popular actress. Despite her success on the stage, Mary Catherine's life was not without its challenges. In 1816, her husband was implicated in a scandal involving the theft of a valuable diamond necklace, and Mary Catherine was forced to flee the country with her children to avoid the scandal. They eventually returned to England, and Mary Catherine continued to act until her retirement in 1828. She died in 1830, leaving behind a legacy as one of the most talented and beloved actresses of her generation.
